Hopewell's history traces back to 1613 when Sir Thomas Dale founded the oldest part of the city. Some major historic events took place in this part of the country, including a battle of the Revolutionary War and, during the Civil War, the 10-month siege that General Ulysses S. Grant laid against nearby Petersburg. The General planned his operations from the Appomattox Plantation, which is a site that still stands today in Hopewell. Indeed, the city and surrounding areas offer plenty to explore for those who are interested in America's early history.

Hopewell underwent modern development following the DuPont Company of Wilmington's purchase of a tract of land in the area. The company used its purchase to build a dynamite factory but later switched its operations to produce guncotton. DuPont no longer operates in the city, but there are several other manufacturing companies in this part of the state.

Enjoy Peace and Quiet Regardless of When You Visit Hopewell, Virginia

Hopewell is a city with excellent weather overall, made all the more pleasant due its location along the banks of the Appomattox and James rivers. It's also an easy day trip from Virginia's Atlantic coast, making it a popular destination during the summer months. Though cities like Richmond, Newport News, and Norfolk will see an influx of travelers from late May through September, visitors in Hopewell can largely avoid those crowds if they don't venture out of the city.

The highs during these months can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but daily averages hover in the 70- to 80-degree range. These are also the rainiest months of the year and, combined with the hot weather, lead to some muggy conditions. You can beat the heat with a day out on the water, or you can plan your vacation for one of the cooler seasons in Hopewell.

November through March, average temperatures hover between 40 and 50 degrees. However, there is a chance for snow, with lows in January through March dipping below 10 degrees. Though daily averages are in the 40s for those months, plan for some chilly mornings and evenings. If you're visiting in the early winter, you can look forward to Richmond's Lewis Ginter GardenFest of Lights and indoor activities, such as a tour of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and a visit to Edgar Allen Poe's House.

Here are some of the most well-reviewed, affordable spots in the area.
