Yorktown's rich history began in 1682, when it was one of the original eight shires formed by Colonial settlers. It was named for the ancient English city of York and was the site of the last major battle of the American Revolution. Because of its strategic placement along the York River and Chesapeake Bay, the town developed steadily throughout the decades.

After World War I, several United States Military branches began building installations nearby. Currently, there's a naval weapons station, a Coast Guard training center, Camp Peary, Fort Eustis, and a Navy shipbuilding yard nearby.

There's a plethora of eclectic shops and fine boutiques in Yorktown. Browse specialty shops and tempt your tastebuds at quaint eateries in Riverwalk Landing. This riverside market boasts local art, decor, and jewelry, as well as restaurants serving seafood, sushi, pizza, and burgers. The downtown area has many galleries and shops boasting local arts and crafts.

Dining in Yorktown is mostly casual, with culinary options ranging from pub food to fresh seafood. Most restaurants are locally owned, but you'll also see a few well-known chains. There are several places to get locally brewed craft beers and local wines.

Yorktown blends with many nearby communities, making it seem like lodging options are limited, but they aren't. There are dozens of hotels within a short drive from Yorktown's center. Options range from budget-friendly inns to luxurious hotels.

When to Visit Yorktown, VA

One of the best times to visit Yorktown is in the spring. From March to May, the weather starts to warm nicely, with daytime temperatures averaging about 60 degrees in March and reaching the mid 70s by May. Nighttime lows range from the high 30s to the mid 50s. Spring can be wet, with about one in three days seeing precipitation. Hotel rates don't increase for tourism season, which makes this a good time to save.

Springtime is when the city comes to life with the Riverwalk Landing Pier's opening and the kickoff of the Farmers Market and Music Jamboree. In April, two large Civil War reenactments and events occur the same weekend. The National Park Service Civil War Weekend and Yorktown Civil War Weekend include demonstrations, reenactments, tours, and more throughout the town. In May, enjoy incredible local brew and barbecue at the Blues, Brews, and BBQ Festival.

From June to August is peak tourism season in the area. Expect hotel rates to climb and vacancies to fill well in advance. Temperatures hover in the mid 80s throughout the summer, but the humidity levels can make it seem much hotter. Summer lows rest in the 60s, making nights balmy. It rains on average about every two or three days in the summer, with most falling in thunderstorms.

Many of the summer events in Yorktown center around the town's history. In June, the Watermen's Museum Military Appreciation Weekend honors the armed forces through dancing, music, live drills and canon fire, and more. In September, you can experience Yorktown as it was in the late 1700s under English rule.

Another great time to visit is in the fall. Autumn temperatures are lovely, with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows dropping to the 40s by November. Rainfall tapers off to about once every four to five days with lesser amounts during each occurrence. Travel numbers drop, and so do hotel rates.

Autumn is a busy time with multiple festivals and events in the city. In October, enjoy live music and culinary masterpieces at the Yorktown Wine Festival along the banks of the Hudson. Celebrate fall at the Yorktown Market Days and Fall Festival Celebration. Kids will love the hayrides, face painting, and games. You'll love perusing dozens of vendors selling their wares like crafts, baked goods, produce, and food.

Winter in Yorktown is chilly, with daytime highs averaging around 50 degrees and lows near freezing. Precipitation falls about one of three days, but most of it is rain. The town only sees about five inches of snow every year. Winter months are slow for tourism, and you'll find great deals on tickets and hotel rates. Make sure to pack some layers and a jacket.

In December, revel in the season's magic at Yorktown's Lighted Boat Parade. The city's waterfront brightens with twinkling lights and holiday tunes from boats competing for the coveted prize. Finish the night with hot cider and live music at the beachside bonfire.
