La Porte was established by developer Abraham P. Andrew in 1832, who built the city's first sawmill later that year. Growth was slow but steady. By 1835, La Porte was incorporated as a town. It launched a newspaper the following year, and in 1842, it established La Porte Medical School, the first medical school in America's Midwest. By 1852, La Porte was reclassified as a city because of its size rivaling any comparable settlement in the area.

While LaPorte grew quickly, it did not keep pace with other large cities in America's Midwest. Instead, it retains an old-world charm with historic building and a quieter atmosphere than larger metropolises. With several hotels and restaurants, La Porte welcomes tourists from around the United States and beyond.

When to Visit La Porte, IN

La Porte has its best weather in late spring and early summer. During this period, the weather is pleasantly warm, but not as humid as it gets later in summer, when temperatures regularly hit 85 degrees. Rain and high winds are also less common in late spring than they are earlier in the season.

Note that May marks the start of La Porte's three-month tourism peak. Book well in advance to ensure you secure the room you want. You should also expect to pay a little more during this time of high demand.

November usually sees hotel prices and flights to Indiana at their lowest. However, you will need to brace yourself for the cold. While it rarely snows in La Porte, average temps in November usually sit around the mid- to high 30s.

Top La Porte, IN Historic Buildings You Shouldn't Miss

La Porte retains many buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Whether you're an architecture buff, a history enthusiast, or you can simply see the beauty in the past, you shouldn't miss these stunning historic buildings while you're visiting La Porte.

Brentwood S. Tolan designed LaPorte County Courthouse in classic Richardsonian Romanesque style. It was constructed from 1892 to 1894 and has remained largely unchanged since that time. Its red sandstone exterior, gargoyles, stained glass windows, and proud tower make it one of La Porte's most eye-catching buildings. The LaPorte County Courthouse is a place of business, but employees will happily let tourists look around so long as they leave their cellphones behind. LaPorte County Courthouse is in the Downtown LaPorte Historic District. While you're there, check out other historic buildings, including La Porte Carnegie Library and the Masonic Hall.

Get a glimpse into how the other half lived at Francis H. Morrison House, a historic property built using an eclectic combination of revival architectural styles in 1904. Its hipped roof with dormers, grand Palladian window, and two-story sleeping porch are so striking. It's a private residence now, so most visitors only see it from the outside. However, every festive season its doors open to the public as part of the Christmas Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes. Other homes on the tour include the Meinrad C. Rumely House and the Seth Eason House.

When the pressures of modern life grind your gears, get away from it all in La Porte, Indiana. Slowing down in this friendly, historic city could be just the change of pace you need to recharge your batteries.
