Start your visit with Fort Montgomery State Historic Site.
Fort Montgomery is a military fortification that the Continental Army built in 1776 during the American Revolution. Controlling part of the Hudson River was strategically crucial for both British and Americans, as the river provided means of transportation for supplies and troops throughout the northeast. The Fort was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972. Today the site is open to the public and is operated as a museum preserving various artifacts and showcasing mannequin displays of military units.
To take an even deeper dive into the region's historical importance, you can visit West Point. It houses the oldest and most prestigious Military Academy in the United States, as well as the oldest military museum in the country. The Academy has operated since 1802. Ulysses Grant, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee are among the notable alumni of the facility. The Museum opened in 1854 and today houses a diverse collection of military items, from George Washington's Pistols to Napoleon's Sword to Word War 1 tank. The museum provides access to Constitution Island and the Fort Putnam Historic Site during the summer months.
However, not only military history is what's attractive to visitors about the region. Hudson Valley provides an unmatched quality of access to nature and outdoor recreation. Today, Fort Montgomery is a well-known stop on the Appalachian trail due to its lodging and food stops being conveniently close to the path. Definitely make time to visit Bear Mountain State Park. The Park spreads across more than 5,000 acres of land, providing a myriad of activities year-round. Here is your place to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, picnics, swimming, and more. The Bear Mountain is also home to historical and educational facilities like Perkins Memorial Tower and Trailside Museum and Zoo. The Park is also a spot where the historic Palisades Interstate Parkway and Bear Mountain Bridge (or Purple Heart Veterans Memorial Bridge) meet. Plan an entire day of outdoor adventures, and by the end, you'll undoubtedly want to come back one day.
