The Newburgh center is approximately the area of Torches on Hudson and the area of Newburgh Waterfront.

Newburgh has a long, interesting history. Before Europeans colonized it, the area was the land of the Waoranek people, which was part of the Lenape tribe of the Algonquin nation. The explorer Henry Hudson was the first European to find this area in 1609. When the first European settlers came to live in the area, the Waoranek people shared and sustained these new settlers and helped them to learn about the new land. More from this guide...

Other historic buildings include the Dutch Reformed Church built in 1835, Belknap Stone House built in 1750, and David Crawford House, a neoclassic mansion built in 1834.
