Three Rivers also sits above Lake Kaweah within the Kaweah River Canyon. In its early days, it was settled by utopian socialists who referred to their colony as Kaweah Colony. However, the creation of Sequoia National Park in 1891 resulted in the group losing its claims to the timber, which forced its members to leave. Walt Disney also had a plan to develop a ski resort at Mineral King, which is now located within Sequoia National Park. The area also served as the home for several well-known local artists, who resided together in the Apple House located on North Fork Drive.
