Walker is a city in Louisiana's Livingston Parish and a part of Baton Rouge's Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area was first developed in 1825 by Michael Joseph Milton, Jr., who received 343 acres of land as a reward for his service in the War of 1812. The Federal government recognized the settlement a few decades later, in 1856, opening a post office in the town that was then called Milton Old Field.
The post office was renamed in 1890 after a Springfield legislator and former lieutenant colonel in the Confederate States of America called Dr. William Elliott Walker. Fast forward to the modern-day, and Walker was officially named a city by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal in 2011. Walker is a thriving city with a growing population, having grown by almost 30% in the last decade and boasting over 6,000 residents.
Visiting Walker is a fantastic experience, as you will get to have all the conveniences you'd expect from a city, while also enjoying the peacefulness and charm of a small town. There are plenty of attractions around for tourists and locals alike. The local restaurants will amaze you with some traditional Louisiana seafood. Outdoor lovers will enjoy going on hikes or bike rides in the local parks, while those who want to learn more about the local history and culture can visit the Walker Museum and the Community Art Gallery.
