In its early days, the area that is now known as Woonsocket was inhabited by the Nipmuc, Narragansett, and Wampanoag Native American tribes. In the mid-17th century, an English settler bought the land, although at that point it was called Niswosakit. The current name may come from a word meaning “at the fork of the river” or another word meaning “fox country.” In the early 1800s, Woonsocket Falls Village was established and grew rapidly due to the success of textile mills. It was incorporated as a city in 1888.
Woonsocket includes 7.7 square miles of land and 0.3 square miles of water. It sits next to North Smithfield and Cumberland, Rhode Island, along with Bellingham and Blackstone, Massachusetts. The city houses the corporate headquarters of CVS Health, a large provider of pharmacy services with locations all over the country.
