Milford is a city off Interstate 495, south of Framingham and nearly equidistant between Interstates 90 and 95. Both of these major roadways lead directly to Boston. As of the 2010 census, Milford had a population of roughly 28,000 people. Given its easy access to nearby major cities, this makes it a good option for a quiet retreat within driving distance of Massachusetts's best attractions. Travelers can also catch one bus in Milford and connect to the Framingham commuter rail, which travels directly to South Station in downtown Boston.

Its proximity to the state's capital and other popular attractions is a major reason why people continue to visit Milford, but there's also plenty to explore closer to home. Many state parks and lakes make the area a welcome respite for nature lovers, and dozens of New England orchards and farms provide plenty of opportunities for apple picking and family fun while avoiding the larger crowds in the bigger cities. This, plus ample quality lodging opportunities, makes Milford a popular destination.

The Best Times to Visit Milford, Massachusetts

Despite some freezing winters and highs in the summer creeping up into the 90s, the weather in Milford is mostly temperate. Indeed, New England's favorable climate is a major draw for seasonal travelers. Average temperatures in the winter months hover around 30 degrees, while the summers are mostly pleasant with average highs around the 70s. But keep in mind that these are just averages; January lows can drop into the negatives, and August highs can approach 100 degrees.

With somewhat predictably pleasant weather and the chance of occasional extreme highs and lows, you'll need to come prepared if you visit in the summer or winter. However, the summer is excellent for visiting the many wonderful East Coast beaches in Quincy or further north in Salem or Gloucester. You'll also find opportunities for winter fun in nearby Blue Hills Reservation, which is a popular spot for snowshoeing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and sledding.

If you visit in the summer or winter, expect more extreme temperatures, more expensive hotel rates, and a greater influx of travelers. For this reason, the fall months (late June through October) are considered the best time to visit. New England is stunning as the leaves begin to change, and you'll enjoy milder weather with fewer tourists. Note that July is the rainiest month, with an average precipitation of roughly 5.2 inches.
