Waterbury was originally settled by European settlers in 1674, though this first settlement was abandoned the next year due to King Philip's War. Luckily, the settlers came back and settled just west of the original plot in 1677. Due to flooding in the area, Waterbury didn't have much growth in its early years. In the early 1800s residents in Waterbury harnessed the power of the rivers to create factories, which in turn manufactured brass. After this, the city started thriving. It was incorporated in 1853 and gained a reputation for its high-quality goods.
Today, there are still many historic buildings throughout the city. There are also a number of more modern attractions to entertain residents and visitors alike. Union station on Meadow Street was built in 1909. The Waterbury Stadium was built in 1930 and was originally a dog track. Black Rock State Park offers great outdoor experiences.
When to Visit Waterbury, CT
Waterbury has a humid continental climate. This means that the city has warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Because of the temperatures, the majority of visitors to the city come during the late spring or through the summer. During this time, hotel rates are high and you'll be dealing with large crowds. However, summer also offers the best option for outdoor activities. In the late fall and winter, temperatures drop, making it difficult to get out and enjoy the area. The benefit of visiting in the winter is that there are fewer crowds and hotel rates drop.
