This area was once called Sandy because it was so close to the Sandy River, but when the post office, which was opened in 1854, closed in 1868, things in the area changed. The Troutdale post office was established in 1880 and the name was changed after a pioneer found a trout pond near his house. One of the area's claims to fame was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not! column. According to the article, the Bissinger Wool Pullery company moved to the west bank of the Sandy River, and then found a cat in a stack of animal hides that were going to be used for products. The cat was pulled out, taken care of, and became the company's mascot while going on to live a long life.

The hottest times of the year in this region of the state are August, July, and September. Temperatures can reach into the mid-80s and drop to the mid-50s at night. The winters can bring cold and snow, and there's often a lot of rain. Sometimes it even snows in the later days of March.
The busiest travel month is August, then July and June. Prices are higher during that time since more people want to get flights and hotel rooms. Tourists don't visit nearly as often in December, so that is a less expensive time to visit the region.
Spring is often pleasant, though the humidity and wind can make it feel colder. Rain is also common, but spring is the second busiest tourist time of the year so there are plenty of things to do. Summer, being a busy season, is dryer and comfortable, but higher in price. Fall is a slow tourism time because the weather cools and the wind and rain come in. Winter is generally too cold for tourists, so the rates are prime at that time.
