The Hohokam first settled the area now known as Scottsdale in 800 AD. The descendants of this prehistoric culture built extensive irrigation canals so that they could farm the region. Evidence of this vast network exists today. When the first European settlers arrived in the area, Scottsdale was a Pima Indian village known as Vasai S-vasoni, which means rotting hay. An irrigation company paved the way for commercial farming when it modernized the ancient water canals. Winfield Scott and his brother, George Washington Scott, acquired nearly 650 acres of land and established a farm in the 1880s.
