The Port of San Pedro originally served as a harbor for the native tribes of the area and housed Spanish ships and trade as early as 1540. The Port is located on the southern part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and benefits from natural protection from the rough waters. In 1909 the port was annexed by Los Angeles and became part of the Greater Los Angeles Port, which is the largest port on the western coast of the United States.
