Although it's technically a suburb of Kansas City, it's a metropolitan powerhouse in its own right, in no small part due to how often it's highly ranked as one of the top cities to call home. Not only is it the ideal enclave for families with children of all ages, but it also boasts a growing art scene as well as an intriguing historical district. It doesn't hurt that it sits smack in the middle of several interesting communities that travelers might enjoy visiting, such as Prairie Village, Leawood, Merriam, and Kansas City, of course.

Overland Park is something of a college town, which means that there's no shortage of hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and stores around the city. The neighborhoods around campuses for Rasmussen College, Kansas Christian College, and the University of Kansas-Edwards, among others, tend to have a bustling and youthful vibe. That's something to consider when choosing a hotel or picking out restaurants and other activities.

The city boasts over 1,800 acres devoted to parks with sand volleyball, public golf courses, trails for biking and hiking, basketball and tennis courts, picnic shelters, and playgrounds. In addition to those public golf courses, there's an Overland Park Golf Division responsible for two impressive courses. Topgolf even operates a driving range there. Other attractions span the gamut between working farms and art installations.

The point is that you can't cross the border into Overland Park with any misconceptions about Kansas. Remember how badly Dorothy wanted to get back. She might not have come from Overland Park, but after one visit, it's the place you'll want to go back to time and again.

Seasonality of Overland Park, KS

Kansas is a quirky place in many respects, including its weather patterns. Overland Park is between two climate zones, so it exists in transition. It's half humid subtropical and half humid continental. As a result, the summers are hot and humid, while the winters are cold and dry. Spring and fall enjoy the most benefit from this arrangement. In both seasons, the temperatures are generally warm enough that you can work up a sweat if you're getting active outside, but a walk around the park is pleasant. Spring tends to have more humidity, though, and autumn has that signature crispness.

What does that spell for your travel plans? That largely depends on what you want to do. Given that Overland Park is something of a golfer's paradise, thanks in particular to the presence of the Sykes Lady Golf Club and St. Andrews Golf Club, you might want to spend your holiday hitting the links. In that case, aim for late spring/early summer, or late summer/early fall. Just make sure you check the play schedule first. Room rates at those times are typically average – or lower – but if there's a tournament, then they might spike.

Otherwise, you can expect to find the highest nightly prices around the peak of summer. Proximity to Kansas City and its sports teams might lead to more expensive rates during high-stakes home games for baseball or football. Expect to find the best prices around school breaks in spring and winter. When the college coeds take off, you can take advantage of their absence.

Luxury Hotel Options in Overland Park, KS

4 Star Average Prices: $117.13

Luxury is easy to come by in Overland Park, especially if you don't mind staying in nearby Kansas City. You can snag a room at the Ambassador Hotel Autograph Collection in KCMO, which isn't even 10 miles away from the city center. The Intercontinental at the Plaza is 6 miles from Overland Park. You can't beat the Hilton President, either – the historic hotel is in one of KC's coolest neighborhoods. Do you prefer eclectic chic hotels? Check out Hotel Indigo, or head to Kansas City, Kansas, less than 12 miles from Overland Park, for a room at Chateau Avalon.

To enjoy a well-appointed vacation at prices that fall on the lower side of luxury, keep an eye out for the brands you love. Brands such as Embassy Suites and Home2 Suites are higher than average but lower than traditional high-luxe rates. You get amenities such as kitchenettes and laundry services, so your vacation will feel more like home.

4 Star Hotel Prices in Overland Park

Lower-Cost Accommodations in Overland Park, KS

3 Star Average Prices: $86.26

Its status as a college town and a Kansas City suburb means that there is an abundance of lower-cost hotel options in and around the city. Hampton Inn and Comfort Inn & Suites both offer low nightly rates, and they're right in town. You can save more if you're willing to stay further away, however. The Motel 6 Kansas City is over the border in Missouri, but it's near the airport and the rates are bottom-dollar. Of course, the Motel 6 in Overland Park is comparably inexpensive, not to mention in town, but you lose the proximity to the airport.

The Econo Lodge in North Kansas City is less than 13 miles away from Overland Park, while the low-cost Americas Best Value Inn & Suites, also in KCMO, is less than 10 miles away. As you can see, you're spoiled for choice. Before you book a room, sit down and think about what's most important: proximity to the airport or being close to the attractions in Overland Park.

Where are the real discounts in Overland Park

Anytime you can get a discount, you have to grab it. A little bit goes a long way on vacation, especially when it comes to your hotel budget. Hotels in Overland Park happily honor senior citizens, veterans and active members of the military, business travelers, AAA members, and large groups. As you search for accommodation, keep an eye out for the brands that provide discounts to select groups.

As a member of AAA, for example, you can score discounts from some of the hottest hotels in the area, including the Courtyard and the Residence Inn. The Raphael in KCMO has deals for members, as well. Inquire at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, too. To potentially save even more, target hotels that already have low rates. You can score an amazing deal on a mid-range room at Candlewood Suites.

Senior citizens traveling to Overland Park can look into lower rates, as well. Microtel Inn & Suites have senior discounts, as does the Days Inn. Travelodge has an excellent reputation as a solid place to stay, plus it takes care of older travelers. Are you in the military or do you perform another type of government service? Spend your trip at the Super 8 for a double deal.

Best Value Options in Overland Park, KS

Getting the best value for your money is the aim of every holidaymaker. In Overland Park, your best bet is to focus on middle-of-the-road hotels that offer all the amenities you need to enjoy the comforts of home during your getaway. Pay attention to places that tend to offer affordable rates the entire year. Rodeway Inn is one such spot, along with TownePlace Suites. The Best Western and Drury Inn & Suites are top choices, as well.

Happening Attractions in Overland Park, KS

Visitors shouldn't skip out on the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, which contains 300 acres of plants and flowers. A trip to the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center is a must, too. In addition to the Johnson County Museum, it's also home to Theatre in the Park, a local theater company, along with Kidscape, the Overland Park Historical Society, a program devoted to fine arts, and a separate art program.

Are you in the market for a kid-friendly getaway? Locals and visitors adore the Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead. The 12-acre farm is home to a variety of animals that kids and adults are welcome to interact with and learn about, but it's so much more than a petting zoo. Interactions with the birds of prey always go over big, but you shouldn't miss the butterfly gardens and make sure you take a half-hour to stroll along the nature trail. Spend time at the Kanza Native American display before heading out to the fishing pond or getting in line for a pony ride.

Before you leave, head down to the historic downtown area of Overland Park. In addition to viewing gorgeous architecture and snapping photos in front of the clocktower, you can shop at the farmer's market and stop by the carriage house. During your wanderings through the city, try to spot all the art installations that appear all over town. You won't want to miss out on those photo ops, either. There's no yellow brick road to follow, but you'll know where to go.
