Hingham was colonized by the English in 1633 and originally referred to as “Bare Cove.” Two years later, the town was incorporated under the name “Hingham” after Hingham, Norfolk, England. Despite the community's incorporation in 1635, the townspeople didn't negotiate the purchase of land from the Wampanoag for another three decades. By 1681, Hingham's 140 families raised funds to construct the Old Ship Meeting House, which is now recognized in the United States as the oldest wooden church structure and building in continuous use.
Today, Hingham is known for its rich and detailed Colonial history thanks to the meticulous records its early settlers kept. The community is connected to Boston via highway, commuter boat, bus, and the restored Greenbush commuter rail line, which has helped make Hingham a largely residential community. Its open spaces and remarkable architecture make it a prime spot for discovering American history and enjoying outdoor recreation.
Whatever your reason for visiting Hingham, you'll be happy to know the area has a variety of hotels to meet your travel needs and budget.
When is the best time to visit Hingham, MA?
The best time to visit Hingham and Boston, in general, is from June to October. Although summer brings in the biggest tourist crowds and expensive hotel rates, the metropolitan comes alive with outdoor concerts, sidewalk cafes, and baseball games. If you want to avoid the crowds and try to save a few bucks on your hotel, wait until early fall when the kids are back in school and fewer tourists descend on the Greater Boston area.
Spring is another great time to visit Hingham, but come prepared. Average highs tend to hover just below 60 degrees in April, so plan on wearing a few layers. Temperatures warm up quickly in May, however, topping out around 68 degrees. Still, evenings in Hingham can feel chilly all season long.
To save the most money on your flights and hotel rates, plan a winter trip to Hingham. For the most part, Boston winters are too cold for tourists, creating plenty of opportunities for a budget vacation if frigid weather doesn't deter you. Bring a warm winter coat and insulated boots to experience the metro's breathtaking snowscape. Just be sure to book refundable flights in the event of inclement weather.
