Although natives settled the area hundreds of years ago, the first substantial, permanent settlement sprung up just before the Civil War when railroads made it easy for ranchers to send their cattle to the Midwest and East Coast. Following the Civil War, Richmond was the site of many battles in the Jaybird-Woodpecker War, which had battles between political groups over who would control the area in post-Reconstruction Texas. Following the war, the discovery of oil caused a surge in population, but today, it's mostly a town for commuters that want to work in Houston, but live in larger homes with a yard.
Make sure to find the perfect hotel in Richmond so you don't miss anything in this charming Texas town.
When to Visit Richmond, TX
Richmond battles oppressive heat throughout the year, but it's at its height during summer, with little relief in sight. Throughout the day, temperatures soar into the 90s or triple digits, and humidity makes everything sticky, so be prepared to sweat throughout your stay. At night, the humidity and temperatures don't take a break, so you're destined to sweat some more. However, the heat doesn't keep tourists away, and hotels can be difficult to find if you don't book well in advance.
To avoid crowds and heat, consider a trip to Richmond in spring. Temperatures have a large spread, often between 60 and 90, but you won't have to brave the heat every time you step outside. The best part about visiting during this time is looking at the many wildflowers that grow in the area, including the beautiful Texas bluebonnet. If you're searching for a hotel at this time, it's highly dependent on what's happening in the area, but expect more choices and better prices than in summer.
When you travel to Richmond in the fall, the summer heat has finally vanished, but there's still a fair amount of humidity. October and November see temperatures between 60 and 80, making it comfortable to explore the city. Bring a raincoat if you visit at this time, as it's a high time for daily showers. Hotel demand falls during this time, so you might be able to snag a last-minute deal for your trip.
During winter, you can enjoy falling hotel rates and temperatures in Richmond. The temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees. Even during winter, the area still has a high amount of humidity, making it feel warmer than it actually is. The good news is that you might need a coat, but at least you won't sweat constantly.
