The town of Port Hope lies at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on Lake Ontario's north shore. The area was originally settled by the Cayuga, one of five Native American tribes that made up the Iroquois Confederacy. This tribe had migrated to the area from New York and established the village in 1779 as a new home after the devastation in New York during the American Revolution.
Late in the 18th century, the first European fur traders settled in Port Hope, eventually turning it into a town with mills and other industries related to the fur trading and fishing trades. By 1834, Port Hope was finally incorporated as a town.
The area experienced slow growth between 1881 and 1951, which prevented most of the original architecture from being demolished to make way for change. The downtown area of Port Hope is now known as the best-preserved 19th-century streetscape in the province of Ontario. The area is regulated so it can preserve the unique architecture and character of the city.
The town is now known as a tourist attraction for visitors looking to take in the historic sites and architecture, as well as a hub for those who enjoy fishing and other lake activities. While the town continues to grow, it's still only considered a moderately sized city that still provides a quaint atmosphere for those visiting the area.
When are the best times to visit Port Hope, Ontario
Due to cold temperatures for a large part of the year, the city of Port Hope is most often visited during the summer months, when the temperatures can get into the mid- to high 70s and you can enjoy all the activities the area has to offer. Peak tourist season in the area runs from the middle of May to the end of September. May through July bring the lowest amounts of precipitation in the area.
Though this time period brings with it the highest costs for accommodations and the need to book a hotel more in advance, it's truly the best time of year to visit to make sure to avoid high levels of precipitation and colder temperatures.
