In the early 1600s, John Smith explored the area, which was then occupied by the Susquehannock Indian tribe. More than two centuries later, an Irish immigrant established the McShane Bell Foundry in the outskirts of Baltimore, which was the area that later became Dundalk. The community was once called “Little Appalachia” because of the large number of migrants from Appalachia. The historic district of Dundalk is also on the Register of Historic Places.
What is the best time to visit Dundalk, MD?
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland with more than a half-million residents, and Dundalk's proximity to Baltimore can cause higher hotel rates when major events are taking place in the city. Some of these events include the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in mid-January, the Orioles FanFest in late January, the St. Patrick Parade in March, the Johns Hopkins Spring Fair in late April, the Maryland Film Festival in early May, and the Washington Monument Lighting in December. Baltimore also has two major sports teams, the Ravens and the Orioles, so home games can increase the hotel prices, as well.
The climate in Dundalk is oceanic, similar to other major cities in the region, although snowfall is more sporadic in this area than it is in Philadelphia or New York City. The community receives about 20 inches of snow per year, and the winters are generally mild to chilly with temperatures rarely dropping too far below freezing. In the summer and early fall, the temperatures are warm and the humidity levels are high. If you plan to spend time outdoors during a trip to Dundalk, you may want to visit during late fall to enjoy the most pleasant temperatures. Spring often brings nice weather, although rain does fall most often during this season.
