Piqua, Ohio, was originally a Shawnee village, its name meaning "a man who arose from the ashes." Inspired by a Shawnee creation story, the term became an appropriate label when the village was razed during the American Revolution, causing the natives to relocate to western Ohio on the Great Miami River. Following the establishment of Fort Piqua in 1793, Shawnee chief Tecumseh left the settlement, which then became the foundation for the city we know today.
Briefly renamed Washington, the city grew into a river port and then subsequently an industrial community with the completion of the railroads. The history of Piqua lives on in cultural sites such as the Historic Indian Museum and the John Johnston Farmhouse. Today, the town celebrates its close-knit community and unique charm.
