James Demint, formerly of Kentucky, founded Springfield in 1801. The town gained recognition several years later when President Andrew Jackson decided to build the National Road through Springfield. The National Road, later renamed U.S. Route 40, was the first improved highway in the United States. Its construction made it easier for people to travel from Virginia to Illinois.
During the 20th century, Springfield became an important center for automobile manufacturing. At least 10 automobile companies operated in the area. None of the companies exist today, but some of them left a lasting impression on the industry. Westcott Motor Car Co., for instance, built one of the first six-cylinder four-door sedans.

Top Three Places to Visit in Springfield, Ohio
Springfield is a small town, but the town has a lot to offers visitors who are willing to look in the right places. When you visit Springfield, take time out of your schedule to see the following three attractions. They will give you insight into the best parts of Springfield.
Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House
Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Westcott House in 1906. By 1940, the owners had decided to make radical alternations to the building's interior. These changes obscured Wright's original intent, which made it less appealing to people interested in architecture. Wright, after all, had designed several other prominent buildings in Ohio.
The Westcott House was practically forgotten until 2001 and was almost demolished. A group of architects and local leaders decided to save the building by restoring it to its former glory. Today, the building's interior and exterior represent Wright's vision.
You can tour the Westcott House from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. It is open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets cost $15 for adults. Seniors, AAA members, and students pay $12, and tours last about one hour. The Westcott House can accommodate only a limited number of guests per day, so you should place reservations before you visit.
Springfield Museum of Art
The Springfield Museum of Art has a diverse permanent collection that includes U.S. and European artwork from the 20th century. Its collection includes hundreds of portraits, photographs, and abstract art. This museum also presents exhibits that change about three times per year. The changing exhibits ensure that you will always have a special experience at the Springfield Museum of Art.
The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. You can also visit on Sunday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Guided and self-guided tours are available.
