Xenia is located in Greene County, Ohio, just 15 miles from Dayton. Its name derives from the Greek word for hospitality, and the city is known for its friendly and welcoming residents. The city is fairly large with a population over 25,000, making it the third largest city in the county and home to the county government departments.
The land had originally been held by the Shawnee Indians, and the city was the birthplace of Shawnee war chief Tecumseh in 1768. The city was founded and admitted to the Union in 1803, with the primary landowner being John Paul, a pioneer who purchased 2,000 acres. It was Paul who had convinced the county commissioners to make the city the county seat.
The name for the city was chosen by vote at a town meeting, and it was Reverend Robert Armstrong who had suggested the name due to the hospitality he had felt from the residents upon his arrival. The town started with a few homes, a tavern, and a schoolhouse but soon became home to a variety of mills and packing plants.
The town officially received incorporation in 1817, and the arrival of the Little Miami Railroad in 1843 solidified the city's industrial roots.
While the area is still well known for its industry, it has also become a popular tourist destination for its many historical sites, museums, and lush natural preserves and parks.
