The area now known as Simsbury was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples like the Wappinger tribe. In 1633, the nearby town of Windsor was established by European settlers who farmed and forested in the Simsbury area. Although they harvested the land, Europeans didn't build a permanent settlement in Simsbury until the late 1660s. Unfortunately, nobody knows where the name Simsbury came from because the community's records were accidentally burned in 1680 and 1681. However, most believe the name comes from the town of Symondsbury in England.
Today, Simsbury is home to numerous homes and buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Simsbury Railroad Depot and Drake Hill Road Bridge. The International Skating Center of Connecticut, where Olympic medalist figure skaters like Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen trained, is also located in Simsbury.
Whatever your reason for visiting Simsbury, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to experience everything this beautiful region has to offer.
When to Visit Simsbury, CT
Simsbury's weather is fairly mild throughout the year, although winters can feel frigid to anyone not used to the cold. The best time to visit is during the spring and fall when high temperatures hover around the mid-60s. You can also enjoy off-season hotel rates from March through April and again from September through November. Just be sure to wear layers and have a warm jacket on hand in case the temperature drops in the evening.
If you really want to take advantage of Simsbury's off-season hotel rates, plan your trip in the winter. Simsbury does average 40 inches of snow per year, so you may want to book refundable flights in case a snowstorm affects your travel plans. Regardless, wintertime in Connecticut is a magical experience. Simsbury offers convenient access to nearby ski resorts and other forms of winter recreation, but even if you're not the snowboarding type, the local indoor attractions will keep you occupied.
It's no surprise that summer is peak tourist season in Simsbury and the greater Hartford area. Highs rarely exceed the mid-80s in July and August, making Simsbury a pleasant getaway for folks who can't stand the heat. Keep in mind, however, that hotel rates are priced at their highest from June through August, so you'll want to book your trip a few weeks in advance to snag any deals.
