The city of Walterboro was founded in 1783. The area was originally used as a summer getaway for plantation owners in the Lowcountry who were looking to escape the muggy conditions, insects, and illness that were common in the area during the summer months. They first called the area Hickory Valley due to the prevalence of hickory trees that covered the hilly area. The two earliest known settlers in the area were Jacob and Paul Walter, who the city was named after.

The area began more development in 1821 with the construction of a courthouse designed by famed architect Robert Mills. The population continued to grow, and the city became a popular stopping point between the states of New York and Florida. Driving this popularity was the establishment of the railway in the 1880s, followed later by the airfield in the 1930s and a major interstate in the 1960s.

In response to World War II, the city became home to the Walterboro Army Airfield, which provided advanced training for fighter and bomber groups. The location was also home to a prisoner of war camp and the largest camouflage school in the entire country. It is also famously known as the training grounds for the famed Tuskegee Airmen. After the war, the base was closed, and it again became a traditional airfield.

Now, the Walterboro area is known for its many historic buildings and as one of the most popular antiquing destinations, attracting visitors from Charleston and Beaufort for day trips and others from across the U.S. as a vacation spot.

When are the best times to visit Walterboro, SC?

There are primarily two popular times of year for tourists to visit the city of Walterboro. The first season begins in late March and goes through late May. Though the area will possibly see precipitation all year round, this time of year has the most comfortable weather, with warm temperatures and only moderate levels of humidity. The other most popular season comprises September and October, though this season will be rainier than spring. The two seasons will see larger crowds and higher prices on accommodations, though the difference is not significant.

Most tourists don't travel to Walterboro in summer, so you can find some great deals if you travel this month, but the heat and humidity can be too much for many visitors, and you may need to plan most of your stops to be indoors. The winter months are wet and cold and not a popular time of year to see the sites.
