Ledyard was named for the Revolutionary War soldier Colonel William Ledyard, who lost his life at the nearby Battle of Groton Heights. The town was settled in the mid-17th century as a farming community. Ledyard was originally part of Groton but gained its independence in 1836.
Today, Foxwoods Resort Casino is Ledyard's biggest drawing card. One of the largest casinos in the world, this lavish entertainment venue is owned and operated by the local Mashantucket Pequot people. However, Ledyard has much more than adult entertainment to appeal to travelers.
What is the best time to visit Ledyard, CT?
Like many other Connecticut towns, Ledyard tends to experience two real seasons instead of four. You'll find the weather most pleasant in the warm season lasting from April to late October rather than the cold season from November to mid-March. Ledyard experiences a tourist spike during summer. This will inflate accommodation prices a little, but not as dramatically as it does in the state's beach towns. However, you're still best booking summer accommodation well in advance to lock in the best rate.
The cold season can be bitterly chilly, especially in winter, when Ledyard receives an average of 25 inches of snow. With winter temps rarely climbing above 40 degrees, any snow-seekers should pack their thermals. Showers will often follow winter snowstorms, further dampening vacation plans.
