Oakland, which was initially known as Independence, was established in 1833. The town's history took a significant turn when pioneer doctor and abolitionist Hiram Rutherford settled there in 1840 to begin his medical practice. Rutherford soon became a key figure in the community, and his legacy is most notable for his involvement in the 1847 Matson Trial, a case that also featured his friend, Abraham Lincoln. General Robert Matson, a slave owner from Kentucky, used to bring enslaved people to work on his land near Oakland each year. When a family of these enslaved people sought refuge with Rutherford and Gideon Ashmore, Matson sued them for harboring his slaves. Rutherford and Ashmore contended that the enslaved people could not be held legally in a free state. Although Rutherford sought Lincoln's representation, Lincoln had already committed to defending Matson. Despite Lincoln's efforts, Matson lost the case in the Coles County court.
