The area now known as Salisbury was once inhabited by the Pentucket tribe of Pennacook Indians. In 1638, English settlers arrived and dubbed the new settlement Colchester. Two years later, residents incorporated their established community as Salisbury, after Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. Residents designed the roads at the center of town to form a compact semicircle, which allowed them to quickly reach the garrison house if they were ever attacked. While the shape is more triangular today, those roads still exist between Elm Street, Bridge Road, and School Street.
By 1866, Beach Road spanned the Great Marsh and provided access to 5 miles of pristine beaches. As a result, Salisbury became a thriving summer resort with shops, restaurants, hotels, amusement parks, arcades, and cottages. There was even a carousel installed in 1914. Salisbury remained a bustling resort through the 1960s, and, in 2004, the last amusement park closed to make way for condominiums.
Today, Salisbury is a quieter summer destination than it had once been, but it remains a popular getaway for families. Whatever your reasons for visiting, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything this wonderful beach town has to offer.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Salisbury, MA?
The best time to visit Salisbury is during the peak summer season. The community comes alive with people exploring the beach and area attractions, which only adds to the excitement. Hotel rates are at an all-time high, however, which is something to consider if you're trying to budget for your trip. Still, you can't beat summertime in a beautiful coastal town.
If you'd prefer to save money on your accommodations, plan your trip during the spring or fall. The shoulder seasons don't offer the same excitement in Salisbury, but the quieter atmosphere is a nice change of pace. Best of all, you won't have to wait in line to enjoy the area's restaurants and attractions.
Although you can enjoy the lowest hotel rates in Salisbury during the winter, it's not the ideal time to visit. Seasonal shops and attractions close and it's too cold to wander along the beach, which keeps most visitors away. Still, if you're mainly interested in dining and a cozy, romantic getaway spent mainly indoors, a wintertime trip to Salisbury might be right for you.
