The Village of Schaumburg was officially incorporated in 1956, but its history dates back much further than that. The area's original inhabitants were members of the Potawatomi, Fox, Sauk, and Kickapoo tribes. European settlers began to arrive by the mid-nineteenth century. By 1870, the township was almost completely German, which was a trend that continued until the Great Depression when many German families in Schaumburg lost their homes and farms. The township's original name was Sarah's Grove, but it was changed to Schaumburg after a county in Germany.
Today, Schaumburg is situated 28 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop in the Golden Corridor. The modern village is home to the Motorola Solutions headquarters, the Woodfield Mall, and one of only two IKEA stores in the state. Schaumburg is also directly linked with Chicago Union Station via Metra's Milwaukee District/West Line.
