The Canibas tribe originally inhabited the area we now call Waterville. The Canibas lived there until 1692 when their village was burned down during King William's War. The original European settlement was part of Winslow, but Waterville broke away when residents on the west side of the Kennebec River became frustrated that they couldn't cross the river to attend town meetings. Waterville was incorporated as a city in its own right in 1802. It built its economy on its strong fishing, agriculture, lumbering, and shipbuilding industries.Colby College gives the city a youthful energy. Despite recent developments, Waterville is still small enough to retain its original charm.
