Located about 11 miles southwest of Asheville in Buncombe County, Candler is an unincorporated community that belongs to the Asheville metropolitan area. Before the arrival of European settlers, the area around Candler was home to the Cherokee people. It was claimed by German, English, and Scottish settlers during the 18th century and served as an open hunting ground for the next century or so.
By 1790, the community had a population of 1,000, excluding the Native Americans. Buncombe County was formed in the following year from parts of Rutherford County and Burke County. It was named after Edward Buncombe, a colonel who was captured in the Battle of Germantown during the American Revolutionary War. The county's residents were mostly Baptists, and it had six Baptist churches by 1807.
Following the completion of a railroad line from Salisbury to Asheville, the area around Candler experienced steady growth as new industrial plants and homes increased in number. It prospered in the early part of the 20th century but suffered a devastating economic collapse during the Great Depression. By 1929, Asheville and Buncombe County had accumulated more than $56 million in bonded debt but managed to pay it off over the next 50 years.
Today, Candler has a population of about 26,300. While it's a largely residential community, it attracts a large number of tourists because of its proximity to Asheville and some of the most famous natural attractions in the country.
