Like much of New England, Manchester enjoys a storied history, tracing its roots back to 1672. Nearby rivers allowed the town to flourish as a center for manufacturing and shipping, with the economy centered on timber, paper, and textiles. In the early 19th century, Manchester was home to one of the young country's first successful glass works and what would become the world's largest silk factory at the time.
Today, Manchester is a growing city of nearly 60,000 residents, many of which commute to Hartford for work. However, the city has a bustling culinary and shopping scene, perfect for locals and visitors alike.
If you're planning to visit Manchester, make sure to book a hotel that fits your needs, lifestyle, and geographic preferences.
When to Visit Manchester, CT
Although New England has the dubious distinction of suffering from bitter cold in the winter, the rest of the year is temperate and inviting. Summer is the most popular time to travel to Manchester, as the sun shines frequently and temperatures hover in the mid-80s throughout the day. Nighttime is still relatively pleasant, although it can dip into the mid-60s, necessitating a jacket every now and then. Make sure to book a room early during this season, as hotels can fill quickly.
Winter can get downright chilly in Manchester. From December to February, temperatures only average highs of about 35 degrees. Throw in up to 12 inches of snow a month, and sunshine can seem like a distant afterthought. However, you can take full advantage of the winter by heading to one of the nearby ski fields or strapping on some ice skates. Hotel demand falls sharply at this time, so you might be able to snag a room with due diligence.
During fall, the weather cools down from the hot summers, often resting between the 40s and 60s. It's definitely jacket weather, but it's not cool enough to keep you from exploring the beauty of the area. Take a trek on one of the many nearby trails for some world-class leaf peeping and a backdrop of vibrant yellow, red, and orange hues. Room availability is highly dependent on the events taking place in the city or nearby towns.
Spring is another fabulous time to head to Manchester, and like fall, the temperatures stay consistently between the 40s and 60s. However, these temperatures can change quickly and without warning, and rain can fall at any time. Bring rain gear wherever you go to stay warm and dry. As far as accommodations, this time of year isn't especially busy.
