Moultonborough is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire. The population is around 5,000 people. It was named after Colonel Moulton, one of the earlier settlers of the region.The town has a rich history, including a role in the Revolutionary War, that is still evident today. It was officially incorporated in 1777. Moultonborough is also home to a number of historic sites, including the Moultonborough Historical Society Museum and Thomas Gustave Plant estate.Thomas Plant made a fortune producing shoes and chose Ossippie Mountains in Moultonborough as his retirement haven.In 1913-1914 he and his wife ordered the construction of a house from an architectural firm of J. Williams Beal & Sons. It is a stone mansion with stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee, which the couple named “Lucknow.” The estate spanned 6,300 acres of land and included luxurious amenities like a six-car garage, tennis and golf courts, a boathouse, and a greenhouse.Since 1959, the property has been open to the public and is known as “Castle in the Clouds.” You can tour the mansion on a self-guided tour, get some ice cream at Cones at the Clouds or get a full-course meal at the Carriage House Restaurant. There's also a beautiful artificial pond and 35 miles of trails that will take you through the beauties of the area.If you'd like to learn more about the local nature, Moultonborough is home to Squam Lake, which is part of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. It is a science center with numerous animal exhibits, educational programs, a public garden, and lake cruises. It has brought people closer to nature for more than 50 years and is definitely worth your time.There are plenty of activities to keep you busy here, from fishing and boating on Lake Winnipesaukee to hiking and biking on the many trails in the area.
