No visit to Thomasville is complete without a stop at The Big Chair, a 30-foot concrete replica of a Duncan Phyfe armchair in the middle of the city. In its original incarnation in 1922, the chair was made of furniture materials by the Thomasville Chair Company, but the weather deteriorated it so that in 1936 it was replaced by a concrete version, which is what still stands today.
Though the High Point Market is only open to the trade, the area around Thomasville has dozens of furniture stores selling market samples and new furniture, lots of it manufactured in North Carolina. Visitors from all over the east coast arrive with large trucks or trailers to save money by shopping in the Thomasville/High Point region, and many hotels are able to accommodate larger vehicles in their parking lots. In nearby Jamestown, you'll find the largest furniture store in the world — Furnitureland South, boasting over 1.3 million square feet of retail space.
After furniture shopping, some short day trips will lead you to some of the region's other attractions. Mount Airy is the model for Mayberry from "The Andy Griffith Show" and is less than an hour's drive. Though the show was filmed in Hollywood, Mount Airy feels like the small Southern town that people have watched for generations.
Just 45 minutes south, you'll hit the town of Seagrove, a handmade pottery cultural center. The high quality of the local clay inspired pre-Revolutionary War settlers to make earthenware pottery, and the tradition has continued. Time your visit with the Seagrove Pottery Festival or stop by during a less busy time of year and visit the North Carolina Pottery Center and make your way through town shopping with the local artisans selling their wares.
The Moravians were a group of German religious settlers who made their home in what was then Salem, North Carolina, and there's a preserved historical village for visitors to learn about their lifestyle and religious traditions just 25 miles north of Thomasville. Period-appropriate clothing, buildings, and activities greet you on the gorgeous grounds of Old Salem. Don't miss trying a Moravian spice cookie, a paper-thin wafer that melts in the mouth.
Every trip to North Carolina mandates trying some North Carolina barbecue, which is smoked, pulled, and chopped pork lightly dressed with sauce. The part of the state it comes from dictates the recipe for the sauce, and nearby Lexington Barbecue offers a famous sample of the Western North Carolina vinegar-based sauce. Along with your barbecue, try some Cheerwine, a local cherry-flavored soda bottled in Salisbury, just a few miles to the south.

We weren't in the city proper that much (we were visiting relatives). Loved the local coffee shop "The Blend."
I only come for family business, but Thomasville is small-town America personified. The historic district is charming, lots of restaurants. It's also close to the NC Zoo.
The room was clean, comfortable. The staff was friendly. The Finch House was excellent
