Walt Whitman House
"Camden was originally an accident, but I shall never be sorry I was left over in Camden. It has brought me blessed returns."
In 1884, Walt Whitman purchased a modest, two-story frame house on Mickle Street for $1,750. It is the only house he ever owned. He lived there until his death in 1892, at the age of seventy-two.
He had come to Camden years earlier, in 1873, and lived with his brother George on nearby Stevens Street. By this time, Whitman's international reputation attracted the attention of the day's most prominent literary figures. Among them, Charles Dickens, Willaim M. Thackeray, and Oscar Wilde came to Camden to visit America's greatest poet.
When George and his wife Louisa decided to move to rural Burlington, New Jersey, Walt chose to stay in Camden. With the surprising success of the 1882 edition of Leaves of Grass, Whitman was able to purchase his own home. He soon met Mary O. Davis, the widow of a sea captain, who was renting a house on West Street. The aging poet proposed that she move into his empty house with her furniture, rent free, and keep house for him. He would provide the living expenses and pay her a small salary. Mrs. Davis moved in and remained with Whitman until his death on March 26, 1892. Whitman referred to Mary as his housekeeper and friend.
During his years in Camden, Whitman became a friend of the Philadelphia artist, Thomas Eakins. These two giants of nineteenth-century American culture found much to admire in each other's work. Each in his own medium broke with conventions, creating something new and distinctively American. Eakins photographed Whitman and painted his portrait.
Today the Walt Whitman House, a National Historic Landmark, provides an intimate glimpse into the life of the poet, attracting visitors from around the world. Whitman's original letters, personal belongings, the bed in which he died, and the death notice that was nailed to the front door have all been preserved, as well as a collection of rare nineteenth-century photographs, including the earliest known image of Whitman - an 1848 daguerreotype.
The Walt Whitman House is located at 328 Mickle Boulevard, between 3rd & 4th Streets, Camden, New Jersey. The House is 2 blocks east of the Camden Waterfront.

Kensington (Neighborhood)
Philadelphia PA
~5.60 miles from Cherry Hill city center
Hotels Close to Kensington
Kensington is a neighborhood located in the United States city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located between the Near Northeast section of Philadelphia and North Philadelphia. Not to be confused with the former Kensington District, now commonly referred to as Fishtown, the area modernly referred to as "Kensington" is more of a section of smaller sub-neighborhoods than a clearly defined area. As such, there are disputes among locals as to the boundaries of the area. Generally-accepted boundaries are the triangular area bounded by Erie Avenue to the north, Front Street (and sometimes Fifth Street) to the West and Trenton Avenue to the East. Within these boundaries, sub-neighborhoods include Harrowgate, Lower Kensington, West Kensington and Fishtown. Due to colloquial changes in the boundaries of the area since the Act of Consolidation, 1854, no clear definition is possible. The Greater Kensington area of the city roughly coincides with the former Kensington District, Richmond District, Aramingo Borough and Northern Liberties Township. Since incorporation into the City of Philadelphia (see Act of Consolidation, 1854), these areas have evolved over time to include portions of the modern "Kensington". The area is located just a couple of miles northeast of Center City and just to the West of the Port Richmond neighborhood.
Kensington is home to a large population of Irish Americans, Hispanic Americans, mainly Puerto Ricans and Dominicans, African Americans, and Polish Americans.
In the nineteenth century, Kensington was one of the leading centers of the textile industry, particularly in carpet manufacture. McNeil Laboratories began with the purchase of a pharmacy in the area in 1879 by the company's namesake.
Deindustrialization eventually took its hold on the neighborhood in the 1950s, leading to a significant population loss, mass unemployment, economic decline, and the abandoning of several homes in the neighborhood. However, some sections of the neighborhood have become arguably gentrified in recent years, especially those near Frankford Avenue, those near Port Richmond, Kensington's neighbor North of Lehigh Avenue, and those in lower Kensington now referred to as Fishtown, a once derogatory name given to area of Kensington where many Shad fisheries were located, another traditionally working class neighborhood which has seen rents increase. While most of the large manufacturers have left, the area has many small shops and large renovated factories and warehouses for newer artisans to set up shop.
Kensington use to be the home of the K&A Gang, an organized group of Irish-American thieves, of whom many of its members were not actually from Kensington, but simply hung out in the bars in the area around intersection of Kensington & Allegheny (K & A) Avenues.
The U.S. Postal Service designates Kensington as ZIP code 19125(Kensington Station) AND 19134 (Richmond Station). Adjacent neighborhoods are Northern Liberties, Fishtown, Port Richmond, Juniata, and Frankford.
Kensington is noted as the childhood home of fictional Cold Case character Lily Rush.
A small minority of the residents of Kensington refer to themselves as "Kenzos." The term can be used both derogatively and affectionately. One prominent example is the rock band known as The Kenzos.

Fishtown (Neighborhood)
Philadelphia PA
~5.70 miles from Cherry Hill city center
Hotels Close to Fishtown
Fishtown is a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Located immediately northeast of Center City, its borders are somewhat disputed today due to many factors, but are roughly defined by the triangle created by the Delaware River, Frankford Avenue, and York Street. Newer residents of the area consider it to go all the way up to Lehigh Avenue, while some older residents maintain the upper border to be Norris Street. It is served by the Market–Frankford Line rapid transit subway/elevated of the SEPTA system.
The name "Fishtown" is derived from the area's former role as the center of the shad fishing industry on the Delaware River. The name comes from the fact that a number of 18th and early 19th century German & German-American families bought up the fishing rights on both sides of the Delaware River from Trenton Falls down to Cape May, New Jersey. Also, in the early 18th century, an English colonist was fabled to have caught the largest shad in the world in the Delaware River.
The apocryphal local legend traces the name of Fishtown to Charles Dickens who purportedly visited the neighborhood in March 1842, but records show this to be false, as it was named Fishtown prior to his visiting.

Penn's Landing
Philadelphia PA
~5.87 miles from Cherry Hill city center
Hotels Close to Penn's Landing
Penn's Landing is the waterfront area of the Center City along the Delaware River section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. It is so named because the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn, docked here in 1682, after landing at what is now Penn St & 2nd in Chester, PA. The area is bounded by Front Street to the west, the Delaware River to the east, Spring Garden Street to the north, and Washington Avenue to the south, and is primarily focused on the Christopher Columbus Boulevard (Delaware Avenue) corridor.
Development of the area is handled by the Penn’s Landing Corporation. The corporation is a non-profit, quasi-public corporation that was established in 1970 to manage the publicly owned land on the central waterfront on behalf of the City of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Penn's Landing serves as the site for several summertime events in the city. The main public space at Penn’s Landing is The Great Plaza, a mostly concrete labyrinth located along the Delaware River at Christopher Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street. Festival Pier at Spring Garden Street serves as a venue for outdoor concerts, also during the summer months. Plans are being developed for two casinos (with licenses granted by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board) along the riverfront, with one being owned by the Planet Hollywood parent company.
A number of historic ships are moored at Penn's Landing. The barque Moshulu is a floating restaurant, the World War II-era submarine USS Becuna and the Spanish-American War-era cruiser USS Olympia (C-6) are part of the Independence Seaport Museum, and the barquentine Gazela and tugboat Jupiter are moored there by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild.
The RiverLink Ferry links Penn's Landing with the Camden, New Jersey waterfront.

Old City (sometimes misspelled "Olde City") is a neighborhood in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, in the area near the Delaware River where William Penn and the Quakers first settled. To tourists, it is best known as the site of Elfreth's Alley, the Betsy Ross House, and many of Philadelphia's other historic sites.
The Old City District occupies several blocks between Front and Sixth Streets, bounded by Vine Street to the north and Walnut Street to the south. The Philadelphia Almanac and Citizens' Manual gives a larger set of boundaries to the Old City area, defined as the area within Spring Garden Street, 4th Street, the Delaware River, and Walnut Street. The Old City Redevelopment Area is bound by Vine Street, the Delaware River, Lombard Street and 7th Street. It is one of the city's popular nightclub destinations for young adults, with its trendy bars, restaurants, lounges, and dance clubs along the three block route from 3rd and Market to Front and Chestnut. Among Old City's traditions is First Friday, a popular monthly event featuring "open houses" by many neighborhood art galleries.
