As we approach Bentonville from the old Daisy BB Gun Headquarters in Rogers, we become more aware of its power. Growing convoys of semi trucks, with Wal-Mart or Sam's Club emblazoned on their sides, pass us as we close in on the Birthplace of Wal-Mart. On the way to its the humble small town beginning, we pass Wal-Mart's giant, modern distribution center and enormous, modern corporate HQ. The original Wal-Mart still exists in downtown Bentonville, well-kept and facing the town square. It would no longer work as a viable business -- Wal-Mart crushes similar concepts -- but serves instead as a Visitor's Center, educating and communicating the Wal-Mart story, and the greater story of success through hard-work and dedication. It is no surprise to see groups of men here, golf-shirts, hairy forearms and metal-band wristwatches, searching for that elusive Spark. The Visitor's Center recalls an old five and dime store up front, while the back rooms are more museum-like. The 100,000,000th square foot of Wal-Mart space is displayed, as well as old employee manuals like the "Origin of Shirley Shrinkage," and the hula skirt Walton wore down Wall Street after the company achieved 8% pretax profits in 1984. Looping presentations such at "The Story of Wal-Mart Video" explain the company's ascent. The "keys to the city" of many towns are bittersweet to look at, when viewed either as symbols of welcome or as "handing Wal-Mart the keys." Wal-Mart's arrival in declining towns is chronicled to make sure the keys are perceived correctly. Wal-Mart saved Brinkley, AR, in "A story of hope and will." And White Squirrel capital, Olney, IL is where Wal-Mart lanterns and sweaters are made by Americans, beating back foreign competition. Sam Walton, the late Wal-Mart Founder, was one of the country's richest people (and family members still are). Sam grew up in the depression, and during this hard period forged his attitude of not "Can Do," but "Will Do." The last section of the Visitor's Center is dedicated to Sam and the Cult of Personality that has naturally grown around him. There are are no magical talismans on display, just items from the normal part of Sam's life: Ol' Roy Dog Food, moldering Moon Pies, his wife's wedding dress, Sam's mud-caked hunting boots, and his favorite pickup, a 1979 red Ford F150 custom pickup with 65,627 miles on the odometer (a significant statistic for Samophiles to know). And, after Sam's death, his entire office was moved from general headquarters and reassembled here. Souvenirs are sold to remember the visit, and to make sure that the lessons of hope and will are not soon forgotten. The Headquarters House Museum hosts the annual Heritage School during the summer months to promote awareness of past traditions and manners. It also provides numerous luncheons and receptions each year for visitors and guests. Headquarters House was built in 1853 by Judge Jonas Tebbetts and his wife, Matilda Winlock Tebbetts. The house is one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture still standing in Arkansas, containing fluted columns on the front porch and dentil trim on the eaves around the house and parlor fireplace. The four-acre property held numerous other buildings and an apple orchard behind the house. Jonas March Tebbetts was born in Rochester, New Hampshire, around 1820 and was educated at the Western University of Pittsburgh, where he eventually became a professor. He left his job there and made his way out west as a teacher and steamboat worker. By 1839, he reached the Arkansas frontier, where he studied law. Tebbetts married Matilda Winlock, a Kentucky-born student attending the Fayetteville Female Seminary. In 1853, they built their home in Fayetteville. Tebbetts became a popular leader of the town, but as threat of war approached, he “made himself notorious” as a staunch Union supporter. In March 1862, he was arrested by Confederate general Ben McCulloch and detained at Fort Smith (Sebastian County), but he was released after the death of General McCulloch at the Battle of Pea Ridge. Tebbetts returned to Fayetteville, but when he was warned of a plot to kill him, he escaped behind the Union lines in Missouri. In the fall of 1862, he returned to get his wife and children. The Tebbetts family never again lived in the house, which was occupied by the Yeater family until the Union army took control of it in early 1863. Tebbetts’s house served as headquarters to both the Union and the Confederate armies during their respective times of occupation of Fayetteville. Even though the house sustained some serious damage during the Action at Fayetteville on April 18, 1863, it was returned to its original grandeur by the numerous owners who bought the house in the years following the Civil War. Each owner stayed true to the original Greek Revival style in which the house was built. In 1967, the house was turned over to the Washington County Historical Society by Paris Green to operate as a historic house museum. The museum contains many period pieces in its exhibits, including Victorian-style furniture, a doll collection, a silver tea service that belonged to the Tebbetts family, and the museum’s famous “Hollywood desk,” on which Gregory Peck signed the Emancipation Proclamation during his role as Abraham Lincoln in the CBS television miniseries The Blue and the Gray. It encompasses 14.1 acres (57,100 m²), and as of the end of 2005, had 7,126 interments. The original plot of 5 acres (20,000 m²) of land for the National Cemetery was purchased from local residents in 1867, it was laid out in sections with space for around 1,800 interments. The first interments were remains moved from battlefield cemeteries of the Battle of Prairie Grove and the Battle of Pea Ridge. By 1871 there were 1,200 interments made in the cemetery, most of which were unidentified. During World War II the cemetery was enlarged and five more sections were added.
