Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is a cancer treatment and research institution founded in 1884 as the New York Cancer Hospital. The main campus is located at 1275 York Avenue, between 67th and 68th Streets in New York City, with other locations in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester County, New York.
MSKCC is actually composed of two intimately related institutions. Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, currently led by Physician-In-Chief, Dr. Robert Wittes, provides patient care, whose origins stemmed from a medical laboratory established on the campus of Cornell Medical Center and funded by John D. Rockefeller, in 1900. The original Memorial Hospital building was constructed in 1939 by a group that included John J. Astor and his wife, Charlotte. Between 1970 and 1973 a new memorial hospital was built on the same site—originally donated by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
Sloan–Kettering Institute, currently led by Dr. Thomas Kelly, is MSKCC's basic-science research arm. The research institute was established in 1945 with a US$4 million gift from the foundation of Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Half the gift was to fund construction of a 13-story research facility and the other half to provide annual operating expenses. Charles F. Kettering, vice president and director of research for General Motors Corporation, was to organize and apply modern American industrial research techniques to cancer research.
In addition to the Sloan grant, a public campaign to raise an additional US$3 million to US$4 million was undertaken and an important financier who stepped in at a critical juncture was the ongoing supporter Laurance Rockefeller, of the philanthropic Rockefeller family.
At the August 8, 1945 announcement, Sloan and Kettering emphasized that the dramatic news of the atomic bomb, developed with a US$2 billion research program, was a graphic illustration of what can be accomplished by scientifically organized research as practiced by American industry. If as much money and talented personnel were available as the government had for the atomic bomb, they said, very rapid progress could be made in cancer research.
The current president of Memorial Sloan–Kettering is Nobel Prize winner Harold E. Varmus.
MSKCC has long been a leader in cancer surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. It was the first to develop services specifically dedicated to the psychiatric aspects of cancer, to the relief of cancer pain, and to genetic counseling.

It has been compared to such arenas as the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

B. King, Pat Benatar, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister and the 2002 Metal Edge Rockfest.
The venue also hosts family-friendly movie nights held on Wednesdays in July and August.
The Town of Brookhaven's management of the facility has not always been smooth. One black mark occurred in the early 1990s, when a local promoter booked several high-profile shows that never happened, and failed to issue refunds, causing lawsuits to be brought against the town. Another venue manager was allegedly fired in 2002. From 2004-2008, the venue ran a deficit of more than $3.9 million.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk (formerly Maritime Center) is an aquarium located in the South Norwalk (or "SoNo") section of Norwalk, Connecticut.
The aquarium has seals, river otters, steely sharks, jellyfish, loggerhead turtles, and hundreds of other animals living in re-creations of their natural Long Island Sound habitats. There are two touch tanks that feature smooth stingrays, crabs, sea stars and other coastal creatures.
The aquarium also has an IMAX Theater with a screen six-stories tall and the equivalent of eight-stories wide. It was opened in October 2007 to show regular, feature-length movies on weekend evenings. Part of the upgrade was installation of a 10,000-watt, digital, proprietary, surround-sound system. In recent years, the Maritime Aquarium has emphasized helping visitors understand the ecology of Long Island Sound and its watershed. The Aquarium participates in or directs local scientific research on Long Island Sound's residents, including a counting and tagging program for horseshoe crabs and annual counts of harbor seals. The Maritime Aquarium also helped create a Long Island Sound Biodiversity Database open to the public.
In 2006, the Aquarium became a partner in SeafoodWatch, a program that encourages consumers to make responsible seafood choices that have a low impact on the environment and promote sustainable fisheries.
The Maritime Aquarium is approximately 140,000 square feet (13,000 m2) and has more than 177,000 gallons of water in its live animal exhibits. On exhibit are more than 2,000 marine animals and reptiles representing in excess of 300 species. There are 93 exhibit tanks ranging in size from 10 to 110,000 gallons. There are two exhibit pools: seals and ray touch. Off-exhibit are another 30-some tanks (varies) and a small pool.
There is a display of detailed ship models with 14 in cases, as well as charts and interpretive signs. In the ship model area and throughout the Cascade Cafe are signs describing the nautical origins of many popular sayings, for example: "bitter end," "scuttle butt," "cat out of the bag," "under the weather" and "three squares a day".

The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion is a Second Empire style country house, now a museum, in Norwalk, Connecticut. It was featured in the movies The Stepford Wives and House of Dark Shadows.
The 62-room mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
It has been described as "one of the earliest and finest surviving Second Empire style country houses ever built in the United States." "The Museum's mission is to conserve the building while creating educational programs on the material, artistic and social culture of the Victorian era," according to the museum organization's Web site.
A master plan for renovating the mansion was expected to be completed in 2007. Plans for renovation work at the museum include adding an elevator, and systems for heating, air conditioning, and sprinklers. Renovation costs are likely to total about $6 million, museum officials said in May 2007, before the master plan was complete.
In a decades-long Christmastime tradition, interior decorators deck out about a dozen rooms in the mansion with holiday decorations. An annual "community celebration" is held in December with Christmas music, refreshments and a Santa Claus. In 2007, 10 interior decorators volunteered their services and materials for the event.
The mansion, at 295 West Ave., sits in Mathews Park, where the Stepping Stones Museum for Children is also located.

Cove Island Park is a beach in The Cove section of Stamford, Connecticut, located on Long Island Sound. It is a popular spot for residents of Stamford to go rollerblading, biking and walking, as well as enjoy barbecues and ride the tram around the island.
Since 2000 the park has been the headquarters of SoundWaters, a nonprofit environmental education organization that offers a free small aquarium, music, canoe trips, school trips and family activities on land and aboard an 80-foot schooner.
Outside the entrance of the park, there is a rink known as the Terry Conners Ice Rink, where children usually skate in the winter, take skating lessons, or even reserve the rink for special occasions, such as birthdays. A bit behind the rink, there is also a nature walk, but it has long been out of commission, with no attempts to repair it.
The movie Reservation Road was filmed at the park, including the opening scene of an outdoor concert and a climactic scene near the end. Weed Avenue, just north of the park, was used in two scenes where a character jogs.

The Fire Island Light is a visible landmark on the Great South Bay, in southern Suffolk County, New York on the western end of Fire Island, a barrier island off the southern coast of Long Island. The Lighthouse is located with in Fire Island National Seashore and just to the east of Robert Moses State Park.
The current lighthouse is a 180 foot Stone tower that began operation in 1858 to replace the 74 foot tower originally built in 1826. The United States Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1974. In 1982 the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS) was formed to preserve the lighthouse. FILPS raised over $1.2 million to restore the tower and light. On May 25, 1986 the United States Coast Guard returned the Fire Island Lighthouse to an active aid to navigation. On February 22, 2006, the light became a private aid to navigation. It continues to be on the nautical charts, but is operated and maintained by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society and not the USCG.
It is listed as Fire Island Light, number 695, in USCG light lists.
When the lighthouse was built it was on the edge of Fire Island Inlet and marked the western end of Fire Island. However Fire Island has extended itself through accumulating sand so that the lighthouse is now nearly six miles from the western end of the island at Democrat Point.

Many legends suggest how Fire Island received its name ranging from pirates setting fires on its shores hoping to lure ships to run aground, to the name being influenced by the bright red color that the island's abundant poison ivy turns in the fall.
The Fire Island Lighthouse was originally built in 1826, after the sinking of the ship Savannah off its shores. It brought into existence an import navigation landmark for vessels that were approaching the port of N.Y.C.
In early November of 1858, the lighthouse size was more than doubled after realization that the prior height of the lighthouse wasn't sufficient as the vessel the Elizabeth ran aground. The stones from this original lighthouse were reused for the terrace base that the current lighthouse stands on.
Rum runners during prohibition also found the Fire Island Lighthouse a good friend as they used it constantly for navigation into the Fire Island inlet.
In 1915, the U.S. Coast Guard became the caretakers of the Fire Island Lighthouse, and they still have a Coast Guard Base on the island.
Nearly a decade after the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1974, The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society raised over a million dollars of funds and returned the beacon to its former splendor saving the landmark for posterity.
In 1996, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society took over the care, operation and maintenance of the Fire Island Lighthouse, but it remains under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard.
At the height of 168 feet, coupled with the fact that it competes only with overgrown six-foot willows with nothing else around it, the Fire Island Lighthouse gets a 5 for Majesty!
You will really appreciate its majesty as you drive south over the Robert Moses Bridge (see below) on your way to the light and see the light miles off in the distance to your left beaconing. It is a really beautiful site!
Also when standing at the base looking up, you will easily imagine that it is the tallest lighthouse in New York, and one of the largest in the Northeast.
A small critique of the lighthouse is that the ocean can not be seen from the base.

Henri Bendel Mansion Museum building - built for New York designer and department store owner Henri Willis Bendel (1868 - 1936) and designed in the late 1920s by architect Perry Barker in a Tudor style, the mansion features lead-framed glass windows, half-timbered walls, gargoyles, a slate roof and multiple chimneys. The museum's collections focus on New England natural history, 19th and 20th century American art, farming implements, and American and Native American art and culture. In addition to exhibits based on its collections, the museum features special outside exhibits each year.
Edith & Robert Graham Otter Pond - an outdoor pool area with two river otters.
Overbrook Nature Center - The nature center contains an interactive exhibit area with small local animals and a classroom.
Wheels in the Woods Trail #7 - a nature trail designed to be universally accessible by people of all abilities, which leads along Poorhouse Brook.
Observatory - The four-story observatory houses a 22-inch (560 mm) reflecting telescope and is used for research (primarily of binary star systems) by the Fairfield County Astronomical Society (FCAS). For a modest fee the public may view planets and nebulae through the main telescope on Friday evenings from 8 to 10 PM, weather permitting. It is located behind the Heckscher Farm just off Scofieldtown Road, and parking spaces are plentiful. On the second Tuesday of most months the F.C.A.S. conducts membership meetings which are open and free to the public. They typically feature a guest lecturer or astronomy documentary.
Planetarium - The planetarium is located in the Museum building and is open to the public on the second Sunday of each month at 3 P.M. A modest admission fee applies here as well.
Nature's Playground - a playground built with nature themes.
Other Facilities - There are trails through 80 acres (320,000 m2) of the center's property, and the trails at the north end connect with the 88-acre (360,000 m2) Bartlett Arboretum. There is a lake, picnic area and gift shop near the main parking area.
