By 1893 settlers had arrived building homes. A post office was established as well as a hotel. Disaster struck in 1895 with an extraordinary 22-inch snowstorm followed in 1899 by the coldest temperature recorded at that time of only 8 degrees. The year 1900 saw another devastating storm resulting in West's decision to sell Deer Park in 1905. Bad fortune continued in the town with an outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease and the discontinuation of the post office.
At its lowest point, only a scattering of houses remained along with the old hotel, the railroad, shacks, and a schoolhouse. Deer Park residents didn't give in to hard times and by 1928, a new refinery was built for Shell Oil. The number of homes and schools had increased and the population, too, by the time 1938 arrived.
Deer Park celebrated in February 1992 in honor of its 100th birthday.
