Dixon was settled during the California Gold Rush. Miners living in Silveyville began to tire of the long distances they traveled to the goldfields of Sacramento. They were also frustrated that the new Central Pacific railroad would not pass through their community. So they decided to move closer to the tracks and Sacramento, to the place we now call Dixon.
The city was originally called Dicksonville, after Thomas Dickson, who agreed a railroad depot could be built on 10 acres of his land. However, the first rail shipment of merchandise was incorrectly addressed to Dixon. The townspeople decided it was easier to adopt the new moniker than argue, and their home has been called Dixon ever since.
Dixon is proud of its agricultural roots, but also features the modern facilities travelers demand like quality hotels, boutique stores, and family-friendly restaurants. Discover the charm of this rural Californian city on your next getaway.
When would bet the best time to visit Dixon, CA?
As a small city, Dixon isn't subject to the same tourist spikes of more popular Californian destinations. Accommodation prices stay fairly stable all year round, so you can choose your travel time based on the best weather, rather than the impact on your wallet.
Summers are extremely hot and dry. Average daily temperatures sit in the high 80s to low 90s, but it often pushes 100 during heatwaves. For a more pleasant vacation, enjoy cooler weather either side of the season. April and May are perfect, with average daily temps in the 70s. Fall is another great option. Summer heat lingers in September, with temperatures usually sitting in the high 80s, but they drop to the mid-60s by the season's end. Winters aren't a bad option either, with typical temps in the mid to high 50s — much warmer than in much of the country.
