The area now known as Oakley was originally inhabited by the Bay Miwok between 1100 and 1770 AD. Spanish explorers arrived in the 1770s, although they failed to colonize the area. Many who did settle in the area during the 19th century died from smallpox and malaria, but the budding community persisted, and Oakley's first post office was established in 1898.
The name Oakley comes from an Old English word meaning “meadow of oak trees,” but the city's name could have been very different if a coin toss had gone the other way. Community founder Randolph Marsh liked the name Dewey for his new city, but his friend, J.T. Whightman, preferred Oakley because the landscape consisted of oak trees and meadows. The friends flipped a coin, and Oakley was born.
Today, Oakley's motto is, “A Place for Families in the Heart of the Delta.” Although it is one of California's youngest cities, Oakley offers an abundant housing supply, a friendly atmosphere, and quality schools that attract young families looking to settle in the Bay Area. When Is the Best Time to Visit Oakley, CA?
One of the best times to visit the San Francisco Bay Area is in the fall when the weather is warm and the tourist crowds have largely vacated the city. Average highs in Oakley hover around 77 degrees Fahrenheit in October, which is perfect for exploring the outdoors. Fall also ushers in discounted hotel rates across the Bay Area, which can help keep your trip under budget.
Spring is another great time to visit Oakley thanks to mild temperatures and lack of rain. Hotels rates remain low until the summer rush hits, and although it's a bit too chilly for swimming by the shoreline, most accommodations open their heated outdoor pools for the season. Spring is also a great time to experience some of San Francisco's key events, such as the International Beer Festival, Carnaval San Francisco, and the San Francisco International Film Festival.
If you're like most tourists, however, you'll probably visit the Bay Area during the summer. Although average highs tend to hit the 90s in July and August, the cool ocean winds create a nice breeze. Around San Francisco, you'll discover a number of seasonal events worth checking out, such as San Francisco Pride, the Fillmore Jazz Festival, and Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.
Since most travelers stay away from the Bay Area in the winter, you can score some incredible rates on Oakley hotels. Just be sure to pack plenty of layers, however, as the chilly winds and ever-present fog can make the city feel much colder than it actually is.
