Galt has also become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The city is part of the Northern California's Delta Recreation Area, close to the Cosumnes River Preserve, and only 30 minutes from the Sacramento Delta and the Sierra Nevada. Galt is also within two hours of Reno, Nevada, Lake Tahoe, the California coast, and San Francisco.
The Cosumnes River Preserve offers excellent hikes for all abilities. The Lost Slough Wetlands Walk is the easiest and is fully ADA accessible via a boardwalk with a viewing platform at the end. The moderately difficult River Walk Trail is more than 3 miles long round trip. Hike this trail before the winter months. Floodwaters can completely inundate the path. For those seeking a longer day hike, the Rancho Seco Howard Ranch Trail winds around Rancho Seco. At 6 miles there and back, this trail also offers views of seasonal wetlands and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Bring your canoe or kayak to the preserve for a serene day on the water throughout the year. You can launch from a dock south of the visitor parking lot. You can also fish from a boat with a permit in season. Whether you choose to explore the preserve on foot or by boat, bring your binoculars along for bird watching. You may see more than 250 different species of birds.
If you're in the mood for a scenic drive, you can follow the trail of history along the Lincoln Highway, which passes through Galt, the San Joaquin Valley, and the Altamont Pass on to the Sierras and through the Donner Pass. Wine lovers should also plan a trip to Grace Vineyards and Barsetti Vineyards in Galt or check out Oak Farm Vineyards in Lodi.
One of Galt's largest attractions is the Galt Market, a flea market held every Tuesday and Wednesday, rain or shine. Galt Market is the place for shoppers who love the thrill of the hunt. The market is located off Highway 99 and offers everything you could imagine, from garage sale treasures to new clothing, electronics, fabrics, furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry, housewares, fresh fruits and vegetables, and a budget-friendly restaurant row.
