Odenton has its roots in agriculture. Few people lived there until the Annapolis and Elk Ridge Railroad built tracks through the area in 1840. In 1868, the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad was built, connecting the city with Baltimore and Washington, D.C. A train station and telegraph office were built where the two train lines met. The town that developed around it was called Odenton, in tribute to Oden Bowie, Maryland's 34th governor.
While growth was slow at first, Odenton's population is booming as more people look for more affordable housing than large nearby cities such as Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, D.C. provide. This interest in housing has led to work in the Odenton Town Center, a project which benefits residents and visitors alike.
