Nicknamed “The City of Stars,” Brisbane has a long-established holiday tradition where residents and business owners place illuminated stars throughout the city. Many of these stars are maintained year-round, which can make Brisbane feel like a truly magical destination.
Brisbane was first inhabited by the Costanoan tribe who lived in dome-shaped dwellings. Spanish explorers arrived by 1776 and established Franciscan missionaries. The city was originally part of a large land tract and dubbed Visitacion City. In the 1920s, the name was changed to Brisbane, although accounts as to why residents chose the name vary.
Today, Brisbane features a small but well-established music scene, a number of craft breweries and distilleries, and convenient access to outdoor recreational opportunities. Whatever your reason for visiting Brisbane, it's important to find the right hotel that allows you to explore everything the city, and the Bay Area in general, has to offer.
When is the best time to visit the Brisbane, CA area?
The best time to visit Brisbane is in the fall from September to November. Temperatures are pleasantly warm and tourist crowds have vacated the area. Plus, since fall is considered an off-season, hotel rates and flight costs are lower than in the summer months. Notable fall events around Brisbane include the Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival, San Francisco Fringe Festival, Castro Street Fair, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
Spring is another great time to visit if you want to beat the tourist rush. High temperatures hover around the mid-60s, so you'll want to avoid any ocean-related activities like swimming, but you can still enjoy the area's attractions on foot. Be sure to check out the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival, International Beer Festival, Carnaval San Francisco, or Bay to Breakers.
Summer is peak tourist season in the Bay Area, so you'll encounter people from all over the world vying for a chance to see the city's attractions. As a result, hotel rates are pricey from June to August. Try booking your reservation a few months in advance to take advantage of any discounts. Important events during the summer include the North Beach Festival, San Francisco Pride, The San Francisco Marathon, and Outside Lands Music Festival.
If you really want to save some cash on your trip to Brisbane and San Francisco, book your trip from December through February. Winter is a great time to save money on a California getaway, but come prepared to encounter chilly winds and rain. Fortunately, there are numerous indoor attractions that make a wintertime trip bearable. You should also check out the SF Sketchfest Comedy Festival and Noise Pop.
