Historically, Allston developed due to large railroad operations, centered around the Allston Railroad Station built in the early 1900s. Allston was also home to large livestock operations, which ended in the mid-twentieth century. Still a major railroad hub, CSX operates a large yard in the neighborhood. Although only two car dealerships remain, Allston was once home to Boston's first automile along Brighton and Commonwealth Avenues. In the early 50s and 60s, Allston was home to major sports teams, housing both the Boston Braves and the Boston Patriots.
The neighborhood has resisted encroachment by business and is a major hub of the art scene. Galaxy Park, among other recording studios, can be found here as well as a sort of ever evolving music community. Currently, the Allston Sound Museum, the Butcher Shop and Problem House all stake claim to the area. The Allston-Brighton parade and annual Allston DIY Fest are must-do's for music lovers of all ages.
