Located in Jefferson County, the city of Festus is known as a smaller city with a population just around 11,000. It is known as a sister city of nearby Crystal City. They are often referred to collectively as the 'Twin Cities," despite them being separately incorporated.
Festus first received its start by the name of Tanglefoot, until 1883 when the name was officially changed to Festus. The city was founded when a company from Michigan sent out searchers to the Missouri area to find any valuable minerals that the earth there possessed. Superior-quality silica was discovered along Pattin Creek, which led to a boom in glass manufacturing. It was during this time that the area was dubbed New Detroit by the owner of the American Plate Glass Company.
While the company employed workers to remove the silica, a city formed around them including homes for the workers' families. The reputation of the town grew, and after being acquired by the Crystal Plate Glass Company, it saw another name change to Crystal City.
Since the new company had complete control over all of the land and its buildings, the new town began to develop around the city, one of them being Tanglefoot. Once the city began to grow, a new more sophisticated name was chosen for the city.
Though known for glass production for the past 100 years, the area is now known as a place of proud tradition and cutting edge technology development.
