In the early days, the city was called Woodspur when it was founded in 1876. Native Americans living there sold their land when the Southern Pacific Railroad built in the area. Locals voted around the turn of the century to change the name, although the current name's origin is not clear. At this time, the area known as Coachella was a small 2.5-square-mile territory. It only expanded in the 1950s as farmers started to grow citrus trees and other types of fruits.
