Dixon was settled during the California Gold Rush. Miners living in Silveyville began to tire of the long distances they traveled to the goldfields of Sacramento. They were also frustrated that the new Central Pacific railroad would not pass through their community. So they decided to move closer to the tracks and Sacramento, to the place we now call Dixon.

The city was originally called Dicksonville, after Thomas Dickson, who agreed a railroad depot could be built on 10 acres of his land. However, the first rail shipment of merchandise was incorrectly addressed to Dixon. The townspeople decided it was easier to adopt the new moniker than argue, and their home has been called Dixon ever since.

Dixon is proud of its agricultural roots, but also features the modern facilities travelers demand like quality hotels, boutique stores, and family-friendly restaurants. Discover the charm of this rural Californian city on your next getaway.

When to Visit Dixon, CA

As a small city, Dixon isn't subject to the same tourist spikes of more popular Californian destinations. Accommodation prices stay fairly stable all year round, so you can choose your travel time based on the best weather, rather than the impact on your wallet.

Summers are extremely hot and dry. Average daily temperatures sit in the high 80s to low 90s, but it often pushes 100 during heatwaves. For a more pleasant vacation, enjoy cooler weather either side of the season. April and May are perfect, with average daily temps in the 70s. Fall is another great option. Summer heat lingers in September, with temperatures usually sitting in the high 80s, but they drop to the mid-60s by the season's end. Winters aren't a bad option either, with typical temps in the mid to high 50s — much warmer than in much of the country.

Luxury Hotels in Dixon, CA

4 Star Average Prices: $165.55

Dixon is a small city so its accommodation options are limited. If luxury matters to you, it's worth taking a short drive to Davis for one of the following hotels.

Hyatt Place UC Davis is conveniently located on the university campus. Its modern rooms are appealing, with high-definition TVs, Cozy Corners with convertible sofa beds, and granite-detailed bathrooms. Wi-Fi and remote printing are free for guests. The hotel breakfast has a small surcharge, but it's more generous than the standard free buffet with tempting options like bacon, sausages, steel-cut oatmeal, and cage-free eggs. Hunger pangs are never a problem, with the Gallery and Gallery Market both open 24/7. If you've overindulged, hit the outdoor pool or on-site gym.

Aggie Inn, an Ascend Collection hotel in Davis, is across the street from the university. This family-run boutique hotel has just 33 recently-renovated rooms, so you can count on friendly, personalized service. The queen and king guestrooms suit short stays, but you might prefer a two-room cottage suite. Along with standard features like pillow-top mattress beds and premium cable, these suites have kitchenettes, hot tubs, and private patios. Work out in the fitness room or take one of the hotel's bicycles for a spin after enjoying the generous free breakfasts, which include omelets, waffles, and pastries from local bakeries.

It's an all-suites hotel with full kitchens and tableware in every room and special discounted weekly and monthly rates. Wi-Fi and grab-and-go breakfasts are complimentary for all guests. Delicious Dining Options in Dixon, CA

Dixon is a community that takes food seriously. It's known for hearty fare, rather than the light meals with small portions common in Los Angeles and its surrounds. Make sure you bring your appetite to the following leading Dixon restaurants.

Bud's Pub & Grill is a cornerstone of the community, a welcoming place with friendly waitstaff and an approachable menu. Its storied history stretches back to 1870, when a young pharmacist established his first business on the site. Current owners Bud and Cherie Fanning pay tribute to the past, recreating the style of the late 1800s in the pub's exterior and interior. Prime rib steaks and locally-sourced lamb are among the menu's highlights. Mid-week meal specials on tacos, tri-tip sandwiches, and ribs help your dollar go further.

Cattlemens is a Californian chophouse chain, but don't let that put you off. While its Western décor might be a little kitschy, its food is first-rate. Vegetarians need not apply, though. While there are some salads and veggie sides, the menu really celebrates meat. A kids' menu caters to mini carnivores. Special steak deals every Monday to Thursday are great value.

S&S Deli – Grill brings the flavors of the Mediterranean to Dixon. Grilled meat dishes like chicken and beef shawarma, kefta, and kebabs are among the restaurant's specialties. They taste totally indulgent but are surprisingly kind on the waistline, so you needn't worry about ending your meal with a piece of flaky baklava!

For something spicier, head to La Cocina Mexicana Restaurant. Its menu features popular Mexican fare like burritos and fajitas. Colorfully painted tables and vibrant wall art add to the atmosphere of this relaxed local eatery.

With its relaxed pace and wide, open spaces, Dixon makes a smart alternative to California's big cities. If the speed of your everyday is draining you, recharge your batteries in this charming Solano County city.
