In its early days, Macomb was settled by German travelers who were in search of fertile and flat farmland, which they found near the Clinton River. The Legislative Council approved the township in 1834, and it was named for Gen. Alexander Macomb, a decorated veteran of the War of 1812. At one point in the township's history, much of the land was owned by Macomb's family, which found success in the textile industry. The area was also a major influence in the logging and lumber industry of Southeast Michigan in the 19th and 20th centuries. The famous rapper, Eminem, references his upbringing in the area in his music and currently resides in Macomb Township.
