Ottawa is a small town in northeast Kansas, about an hour and a half from Kansas City. The town is home to about 12,000 people and is a mix of rural and suburban. The local community is proud of its city to be the county seat of Franklin County and the home of Ottawa University. The word Ottawa means “to trade” and is derived from the name of the Native Tribe to which the land belonged originally. Around the 1860s, the Ottawa University was founded to provide education for Native Americans and the new settlers' children. The Ottawa Tribe gave 20,000 acres of their land to establish the school, and the name was obtained through a treaty connected to that act. Today, Ottawa has a strong economy, excellent schools, and a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities. They also have a variety of restaurants and businesses to enjoy, and the city is constantly growing and expanding.Start your day by exploring the Franklin County Historical Society and Museum. It is housed by a former Carnegie library that was built in 1911. The Museum displays a diverse array of artifacts and photos telling the county's history since 1968: from Native American tribes to railroad development to aviation and healthcare. The Ottawa Depot Museum is another wonderful spot to learn about the area's history. The depot reopened as a museum in 1963 and is a branch of the Franklin County Historical Society. Today it explains the importance of trains and railroad construction in the development of small towns. Permanent exhibits include the Model Train Room, the Historic Room Recreation, which shows how the building may have looked in the Victorian era, Bleeding Kansas focuses on the Pottawatomie Massacre and has an immersive element. The Museum has received several grants from various organizations for reconstructions and development over the years so that every visitor may find something exciting and engaging around its displays. Then head to the scenic Riverfront Park and Second Street Dam. It is a wonderfully serene spot for a relaxing walk or a picnic lunch. Look at the water rushing and falling from the dam; you can even touch it from the specifically equipped platform for safe viewing. Here you'll also find excellent spots for fishing and several picturesque trails. However, note that swimming is not allowed in the area. If you're looking for some more outdoor adventure, visit the Clinton Lake State Park for hiking, fishing, and swimming. Or spend a day at the Kanza Park or Ottawa Recreation Commission. Catching a concert at the Ottawa Memorial Auditorium is also a must for your visit. It is a premier destination for live performances and shows in Ottawa. It was founded in 1919 to commemorate those who lost their lives in World War I. Due to the flood in 1951 and poor maintenance over the years, the auditorium was considered unsafe in 1974 and closed down. However, the local community has stood up, created funds, and saved the facility. The venue reopened in 1978.
