Malta, NY, is a small town in Saratoga County, just south of Saratoga Springs. Today, Malta is a quiet town that is home to a variety of businesses and a population of just over 14,000 people. It's a place with a rich history, and it's the perfect destination for those looking for a quiet, rural getaway. First things first, this area provides unique opportunities to immerse yourself in the country's heroic history. Visit the Saratoga National Battlefield, which is the largest unit of the Saratoga National Historical Park. Here, you'll be able to explore the battlefield on a self-guided tour, accompanied by various resources like interpretive stands, brochures, or specially developed mobile/tablet apps. You'll also meet characters of this pivotal point in history during historical reenactments. Saratoga Park also has the Old Saratoga Unit that offers sites like the Schuyler House - 1777 county estate of American General Philip Schuyler, Saratoga Monument - 155-foot obelisk in honor of American victory, and Victory Woods - the last compound of the British Army under the command of General John Burgoyne before their surrender on October 17, 1777. Shenantaha Creek Park is another great open space to spend a day out. It combines access to excellent outdoor recreation with some historical features. Several points of interest that are worth visiting are Flax Mill Ruins dating back to the late 1700s and the Historic Moraine Area. Shenantaha Creek is also pierced through by the Zim Smith multi-use Trail. It runs twelve miles connecting six towns and cities on its way. The trail also has some historical roots, as it was laid in the place of the former Delaware & Hudson Railroad. The park's amenities include basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a playground with swings, pavilions, and a beautiful open space to explore. Check out some of the local wineries. Malta is home to several award-winning wineries, including Plaza Wine & Spirits and Ballston Spa Vineyards. Sample some of the region's best wines and tour the vineyards. Malta Drive-In Theater is a wonderful, unconventional way to spend a night out in the town. It is one of the oldest drive-ins in the country, operating since 1949 and one of approximately 450 such theaters left. It is usually open from April through October.Malta is not only home to significant historical artifacts and beautiful nature; it is also a base for Luther Forest Technology Campus. The Campus represents a 1,400-acre site created for nanotechnology manufacturing and various tech research. Some of the companies housed there moved their headquarters from Silicon Valley. The originator of the forest, Tommy C., has created the largest pine forest in all of Northeastern US. It is undoubtedly a stunning sight to see. If you'd like to add some extreme to your trip, visit Albany-Saratoga Speedway. The place is dubbed “The Great Race Place” and has hosted various dirt racing events and car shows from April to September since 1965.
