When to Visit Montgomery, TX

From May through August, Montgomery suffers from triple digit temperatures and humidity that easily ranges into the 90s. If you have to head outside, be prepared to sweat, or dress as lightly as possible. Despite the stickiness and general discomfort from being outside, the heat doesn't keep tourists away, especially if you're heading out on the lake. While the water does provide a brief respite from the heat, it's still hot throughout the day. Hotels can be difficult to find if you don't book well in advance.

When you travel to Montgomery in the fall, the summer heat has somewhat dissipated, but there's still a fair amount of humidity. October, November, and some of December see temperatures between 60 and 80, making it comfortable to explore surrounding area. Showers can sneak in out of nowhere, so make sure to bring a raincoat. Also, if you decide to go to the forest, bring a jacket as temperatures can fall quite dramatically once the sun goes down.

To avoid crowds and heat, consider a trip to Montgomery during the spring. You won't have to bring a sweat towel everywhere you go, and the temperatures generally hover between 60 and 80 degrees. If you head to the nearby Sam Houston National Forest or the rolling hills to the west of the city, you're treated to lush, green hills and tons of amazing, blossoming wildflowers. Expect hotel room prices to drop during this time, or at least until city folk from Houston start to come up for weekends.

Montgomery enjoys a cool, albeit mild winter with temperatures ranging from 40 to 60 degrees. However, high humidity makes it feel much warmer than it actually is. You will probably need a coat throughout your stay during this time, but for most, it's better than sweating profusely. For an affordable vacation, there's no better time to book your hotel room.

Top Attractions and Destinations in Montgomery, TX

Located on beautiful Lake Conroe, Montgomery is your gateway to water sports. Whether you have your own gear or you need a rental, you can find it all here. Canoeing, boating, tubing, water skiing, and wakeboarding are all possibilities on this 21,000-acre lake. On weekends in the summer, the lake can get crowded, but you'll have access to plenty of areas where you can drop anchor, grab a few adult beverages, and make a few friends.

Fans of extreme sports can also try their hand at hydro-rocketing. This activity requires you to strap an apparatus to your feet that shoots highly pressurized water downward, sending you airborn in the process. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's definitely worth a try.

With over 163,000 acres of protected woodlands, Sam Houston National Forest is another spectacular destination. Fishermen will love the black bass fishing at lakes and ponds throughout the park, while hikers can traverse portions of the 129-mile Lone Star Trail. If you manage to get here during spring, you can see redbud trees and weeping willows blossom with huge, beautiful flowers. For something a bit more exciting, grab your mountain bike, four-wheeler, or all-wheel drive vehicle and explore the park on the state's only off-highway vehicle trail in a protected area.

When you're done exploring the lake or the forest, don't forget that you're in the heart of Texas' wine country. Several wineries grow grapes and produce some of the finest red, white, and blush wines you've ever tasted. Bernhardt Winery is on the outskirts of town, set atop rolling hills that provide a breathtaking view. From April through November, the winery invites you to join them for live music and wine tastings with a dozen of the finest food trucks from the Houston area and beyond. Other times of the year, you can pop into their tasting room to sample their award-winning spread of red, white, and rose wines.
