Mukilteo was first inhabited by Native Americans 600 years before the first European and American explorers arrived. In the mid-1800s, the settlement became a quiet fishing and logging village shared by both settlers and natives. In 1855, it was the site of the Treaty of Point Elliott, which laid out land usage and ownership rights for the U.S. government and 82 tribes. In only 35 years, overfishing by settlers all but forced the natives from the area until 1974 when a series of fish-ins caught national media attention and secured the natives' right to land near Mukilteo.

Although the treaty and subsequent events were some of the most important historical events in Mukilteo's history, the town was also home to some less savory elements as well as the war effort. During Prohibition, Mukilteo was a stopover for gangsters moving liquor from British Columbia to Seattle. In the 1940s, the city became part of Seattle's storied aviation industry and acted as an auxiliary fueling area for warplanes.

Mukilteo formally incorporated in 1947. Today, it's an affluent bedroom suburb home to slightly more than 20,000 residents. Thanks to its laid-back atmosphere, stunning views, and convenient positioning to the top destinations in the area, it's no surprise that CNN Money voted Mukilteo as the "Ninth Best Place to Live" in its annual report. Whether you're thinking of relocating, planning a vacation, or traveling to Mukilteo on a business trip, choose a hotel that's ideal for your tastes, budget, and lifestyle.

When to Visit Mukilteo, WA

The most popular time to visit Mukilteo is during the summer. From June to August, the temperatures stay consistently between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and provide the perfect weather to explore the area. The infamous rain tends to stay away for longer periods. Bring a light jacket just in case of weather changes — the sea breeze can be a bit nippy. However, the trade-off with the weather is that accommodations are in high demand. Book your room in advance to get the hotel and rate you want.

If you want to avoid the crowds that arrive during summer and don't mind brisk weather, head to Mukilteo in September and October. Temperatures can fluctuate between 40 and 70 degrees suddenly and without warning. You'll need clothes for all types of weather. Since precipitation also increases during this time, you'll want to pack an umbrella and a raincoat. Hotel rates drop sharply during this season, which makes the fall an excellent time to snag a deal on a hotel room.

Getting a great deal on a hotel is easy in winter, but it's not the best time to visit. Constant rain and snowfall can hinder visibility and exploration. Nonetheless, Mukilteo makes a superb base if you love winter sports, since the Cascades offer world-class skiing and snowboarding. For business meetings or a relaxing vacation where you stay indoors, booking rooms between November and February will leave you with a bit of money to impress clients or order room service.

Rain and chilly temperatures keep tourists at bay from March to May, but you don't have to be the one to stay away. With the proper clothes and rain gear, you can explore Mukilteo and the surrounding area economically. Wineries also start their operations during this time, and a visit in late spring can give you plenty to do (and drink). Hotel rooms aren't heavily booked, but you may want to choose your hotel if you want to arrive on or around Memorial Day weekend.
